Catechesis is a systematic, comprehensive passing on of the Catholic Faith. The word catechesis comes from the Greek word catechein, meaning “to echo”. Catechesis began as the oral passing on of what one heard or the echoing of what one had been told. This was the initial way the apostles communicated the way of Christ to the early followers of the Church. Very early on the Apostles began to write down this Good News of Jesus Christ. These writings became the first teaching texts of the Church. During the last 2000 years, the method for Catechesis has changed, but the message remains the same. Catechesis is the act of presenting the whole of the Faith; it is Christ’s message as it was heard from Him.
Divine Mercy Parish offers formal catechetical formation to Kindergarten through sixth grade students on Sunday mornings during the school year. Our parish strives to provide a comprehensive program using rich Catholic catechetical material taught by trained volunteer catechists. Our parish focuses on partnering with parents, the primary catechists of their children. Students in each grade level learn about the faith in an engaging, encouraging and safe environment. Divine Mercy Parish offers a two year Sacramental preparation program for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion beginning in first grade.
Registration for classes begins in August each year. If you are joining us during the school year, please contact the Youth Formation office to register.
Students in 3rd-6th grade preparing to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion are encouraged to register and attend weekly classes with their peers. In addition, they are offered a special sacramental preparation course that meets once a month for two years.
Volunteer catechists are called to be “echoers” of the Good News. Catechists should be practicing Catholics who participate fully in the communal worship and life of the Church and who have been prepared by appropriate catechetical teaching. Catechist’s children receive free tuition. Contact the Youth Formation office if you are interested in becoming a catechist.
